5. Leadership
a. Apply knowledge related to the complex aspects of leadership in a healthcare organization, including working in interdisciplinary teams.
During the Leadership in Health Professions Education class, I worked on the “Leadership Diversity and Inclusion Statement” project. In this project, I wrote about how and why my organization’s Patient Satisfaction team was created. The members of the team consisted of multiple age differences, races, genders, and modalities. The diversity within our group helped in implementing medical forms in different languages for patients of different races and cultures. Understanding individuals’ beliefs and values creates a stronger inclusive community within the organization while providing care patients deserve. A diverse leadership team like this is important in making well rounded decisions through evaluation of many different perspectives.
While working in interdisciplinary teams for a healthcare organization, it is important to not only know your personality type but also the personality types of your colleagues. During the Healthcare Management course, we completed a Personality Type Survey that gave us insight of our own leadership skills. Leaders are more effective when they understand their own personalities. Different personalities have different needs and ways of behaving. Open minded leaders value the differences and use it to work together effectively. The survey shows that I am foremost a teacher, as well as a provider and a communicator. Working as a supervisor, I am teaching others how to recognize their own personalities and how they contribute to our team. After taking this survey, part of my evaluation was that having the knowledge behind everyone’s diverse personalities helps in selecting the right task for the right team member to accomplish goals. If interdisciplinary teams were to complete this Type Indicator Survey, the team may work more efficiently using the strengths of all their members.
