5. Leadership
b. Employ leadership through innovation, mentorship and reflective practice.

The plan and strategies activity focuses on reflective practice and mentorship. As the organization strives to improve patient satisfaction scores, the Patient Satisfaction Committee also uses E-Thank You Cards to recognize the great work employees are achieving. The recognition provides employees compliments and feedback. This innovation creates a reward for employees in an effort to help employees be self-aware and create self-motivation in the process. As a mentor, leaders need to influence, guide and give directions. With positive reinforcement, employees grow individually and professionally striving to perform at their highest potential. By doing the E-cards over the course of a month, there was already an increase seen in the organization’s patient satisfaction and it boosted employee morale.

In Leadership in Health Profession’s Education, I completed a project titled, “Attitude & Self-Awareness: How it Impacts Our Patients.”  This project brings awareness to how individuals like myself can help improve and develop self-awareness skills. By monitoring and mentoring individuals’ actions and behaviors through different processes, we can find effective ways to influence the self-awareness and attitude of individuals. Leaders need to self-reflect and evaluate how they are perceived and how they perceive others. Through leader’s mentorship, employees mimic behaviors by habit.  After this project, I learned that actions speak louder than words.  I am very self-aware of how I react in any situation because my fellow colleagues are influenced by my actions and reactions. I also have found that attitude is contagious and having a positive attitude will radiate to others.
